Wood at the Lake is the pastel I did as a demo for the Pastel Society of Colorado and it turned out to be the study for the 24 x 24 oil on panel.  After I got the pastel home, I began the oil and almost finished it before bringing it to the Pastel Society Workshop the following weekend. The workshop was for oils and pastels, so I brought the unfinished oil along.

I got very close to the finish but kept making it too tight. It was illuminating to discuss and work on it wth the class, pointing out the problems and possible solutions.

Once the oil was in the studio I let it dry and with a very concentrated effort, I resolved the transition between the background and the left edge of the trees. I kept adding more complexity but not in an illustrative way. Both of these images are now available as limited edition giclee prints.

It is unusual for me to do an oil this small but it is part of a display for my upcoming exhibit in the Denver metro. I'll be in Houston for my one-man show on the same December 4 date.

Ken will demonstrate painting using oil and pastel. He will discuss the idea of making strong starts and keeping the way open for more interesting and dramatic finishes. Ken is a very hands-on teacher, so there will be some collaboration if you are open to it.

In addition, Ken will talk about business and promotion, necessary to being a successful artist in the marketplace.

There will be serious discussions, laughs and your questions. We will all come away with new tools to take your art to the next level.

New Oil and Giclee: Golden Moment Against the Reds

Here is a new oil I'm very happy with, GOLDEN MOMENT AGAINST THE REDS, oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches.  It is currently exhibiting at Atherton Fine Art, Atherton, CA. This image is also available as a giclee on paper or canvas.

The upper part of this oil has a lot of paint application.  I was all about making the red and oranges sing, but at the same time, I wanted a poetic, delicate feel.  When I first started this oil, the foreground was dashed in with fairly thin yellow paint and it set the tone for a poetic work.  Only after the top portion was essentially done, did I add the reds into the lower foreground.  I wanted to keep that foreground delicate against the thicker paint application in the trees above.  Adding the yellow foliage at the top left was necessary to give more depth, appeal, and to balance the large amount of red forest. Afterward, I was pleasantly surprised at the overall effect of the glowing reds and golds.

New Pastel: Bright Flow

I got to push off on this pastel.  It's a line of trees that I'm familiar doing, but I never got this much glow and chroma going on before.  I was aware of what was happening on the paper and kept adding power.

The tree on the right was a big problem.  It was a dark mass and I kept trying to resolved it as a dark body.  I finally ran out of reasonable options and just smashed in a bright yellow over the darks to make something, anything happen.  I got an unexpected result of a delicate, transparent tree and with some added details, a convincing addition to the right side of this work.

On the lower left side I added the reds, subtracting red color with a blue overlay from the left to right.  I debated toning down the far left red but elected to leave it exposed and ran more reds up into the line of trees.  It screams a bit this way and I like the noise it makes.  This will make a great path to a larger oil.

I did this during the Casey Klahn workshop recently in Denver.  He had the room cookin' it that day!  Did I tell you he is a dangerous character? :)

My New Book just released

After much more effort than I ever dreamed, I have today released a large format book of my works in oil, pastel, monotype, etching and collage.  It is a very high-quality hardback book, 11 x 12 3/4 inches, with 94 color pages of images from my last 19 years as an artist.

I haven't held anything back in compiling the best of my works. As a result, I've allowed this book to fill over 90 pages. Since it is a print on-demand book, my cost to produce each copy is just over $100.

So, for those of you that want a copy at a great value, I'm also offering this book and a very high-quality, signed giclee print of the cover image, for a total price of the book and giclee print of $150.
