New Work: Saccade XII, oil on canvas, 48 x 60 inches
![]() |
Saccade XII, oil on canvas, 48 x 60 inches $10950 framed Saks Galleries, Denver, CO |
The purpose of the Saccades is to create a painting without a singular point of interest. Doing so presents a number of problems, first being that all the areas on the canvas are equally interesting. This is a good practice for most paintings anyway, so this oil puts that idea to task.
There is the additional game in play here and that is depth. The viewer gets the impression of being in the darker part of the forest looking out. The light is there, but nothing much is revealed.
There is a considerable forest pattern effect across the 4 x 5 foot space. It has an abundance of complexity and just enough depth to be an intriguing presence on the wall.
About the Saccades Series shown here:
"Since the late 19th century, researchers have been aware of the phenomenon of saccades, the rapid movement of the eye as we shift our attention from one thing to another. As a result, vision itself is discontinuous. We construct a “map of reality” from saccades much as a film editor puts together a scene from individual camera takes." ALL OVER SUNSET, STUDY Pastel 13 3/8 x 17 7/8 Private collection, Vancouver, Canada Exhibited: Page Waterman Gallery, Wellesley, MA |
A very good friend in Florida sent me a photo of a sunset through the trees while on her walk. I kept coming back to that image and finally, I gave it a shot in pastel. The trees had a nice vertical aspect and they were very close together, a great set up for a more abstracted piece.
As the image progressed it became a playground for different colors. At first, it was all in warm tones and as the pastel moved forward, the blues and reds created more interest and interesting contrasts.
When it was done, I wanted more of that composition so, I started a 4 x 6 canvas and it worked out to be a very successful painting.
My thanks to R. who supplied the inspiration and to the collector in Vancouver that contacted me. It was very satisfying to make the sale and the conversation that followed was remarkable. Many thanks to you as well.

New Work: Saccades XIII Oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches
![]() |
Saccades XIII Oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches Dominique Boisjoli Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM $8950 framed |
I love these somewhat abstract Saccades works with their endless variations. For this piece, I wanted the yellow to be predominant but not accompanied by the usual birch or aspen tree markings. The idea was to create a forest with depth that allows this yellow glow surround.
There isn't any sky visible and that adds to the effect of a totally yellow view into this forest. The forest ground also is aglow with a number of colors that add to the overall effect but with color that is more modern, not green grass and ground.
Overall, the effect is luminous and interesting everywhere, creating an effect where the eye never completely rests on a focal point.

New Work: Meadow View, High Contrast oil on canvas, 36 x 60 inches
![]() |
Meadow View, High Contrast oil on canvas, 36 x 60 inches |
When I step outside my studio and look to the foothills, I see this view. On one of those occasions I caught this orange sky at sunset and it prompted me to start this oil. Since the sky is a bit surreal, it compelled me to push the colors of the trees rather than using the drab greens in real life.
Once I started the canvas, things were going along nicely but after giving it a pause for a few days, the painting was lacking more punch. Obligingly, I added more colors to the line of trees and more changes to the back hills and foreground.
Two days later, I had just finished up a private lesson and in the corner of the studio, this meadow view was calling out for more work - a bigger move. There were a number of colors still on the palette from the class and a pale cobalt blue stood out. I loaded up a brush, walked over to the big oil and added the glowing blue across the top of the foothills. That made a larger change than I had counted on, but the result was a good one.
That blue really moved the painting forward and more changes would be needed to bring the rest of the oil up to that higher mark. The foreground was lacking something, being in its present green meadow state. To correct that, my first move was to add the blue-purple banding at the top of the meadow under the trees and then overpaint the meadow grass with a variety of soft colors.
The oil was essentially finished and the rest of the time was spent in what I call 'tuning up' the canvas with a variety of brighter colors, giving attention to edges and working on small compositional elements.
Looking back, the painting is quite simple, two light areas divided by one dark one but hundreds of brushstrokes make it happen. I feel so fortunate to be a painter.

Iridescent Lake Oil on panel, 24 x 24 inches $2150 unframed |
I was very interested in red today, or more precisely, red on red on red. This oil was started with that in mind and once finished, the ambient light bathes everything in saturated red tones. For a colorist painter, it is a happy day.
One red won't do, otherwise the oil would become monotonous like one note over and over again on the piano. Instead, slightly different reds create an attractive disharmony, like a chord containing a sharp or flat note... a bit complicated and more orchestral or jazzy.
It did make a noise hanging in the studio!

Ken Elliott and Casey Klahn Workshop Intensive October 4-8, 2018
Casey and I just completed our 4 day Workshop and we are proud of all the hard work put in by the attendees and the great results they had.
Throughout the 4 days, a number of different concepts and images were created by the artists. We sought inspiration, explored possibilities and even copied the masters.
Much was learned and we had a remarkable time together.
Casey and I will do it again in 2019, Thurs-Sun April 25-28. Sign up information will be on Ken's website in a few days. We hope to see you there!

Evening Song, Foothills Oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches $10400 framed Saks Galleries, Denver |
At the end of my day in the studio, I often walk out back and see tree patterns in the large meadows near the foothills. The sun has already set and the available light changes the look of everything. I have often wanted to paint a pure arrangement, just the basic elements of that view.

There is a bit of both here to keep things interesting, but my focus was create a simple landscape composition with aquas and blues. As the painting developed, the lighting became softer and I found myself just following along, enjoying the developing scene.
All of the sky and most of the blue hill in this finished work are from the first painting sessions and it was fascinating to observe how both areas seemed to take on a glow as the rest of the oil moved forward.
This is one of the softer, lower-intensity pieces I have ever done and I like the presence and calm it gives to the room.
It's like a whisper.

"Thank you so much for the wonderful, thought compelling workshop. You rekindled my love for making art. Your enthusiasm is contagious and felt throughout the room. You set up a stimulating environment that provided continuous visual images. Your generosity in sharing your own photos was much appreciated. I found you to be humorous, supportive and kind. "So, when my friend, Ken Elliott, told me he was co-teaching a workshop on color with Casey Klahn, I immediately said sign me up! Ken's work is simplified impressionist landscape with an emphasis on bold color like reds and yellows. Casey's work is influenced by the cloudy days of the northwestern part of the United States, and his paintings are simplified, abstracted landscapes. Casey uses subdued colors like blues and purples. Both artists' style and color sense are so dramatically different than mine that I knew I would be challenged by this workshop. And indeed I was! I have to smile when I see the work I produced in this workshop. It's so unlike my usual work."

Sunset Pond, pastel, 9 x 12 inches Private collection Exhibited: Dominique Boisjoli Fine Art |
I had the wonderful pleasure of visiting a friend on a lake. She had a paddleboat that came with two great incentives: the view and a Starbucks on an opposite shore. A lot of time was spent on the paddleboat and one of the lake photos yielded this sunset view.
This pastel was a delight to do. My intention was to keep it really simple and the center of the pastel reflects just that. OK, so I added a bit more detail to the clouds but then it changed everything. Now the edges of the scene called out for more detail as well. Adding foliage to the sides was very helpful but the center as it was originally done was now lacking something. If you change a thing in one place then it often requires adjustments elsewhere.
I realized I had the perfect opening in the center part of the view to heap more color on the band of trees. I put in a variety of colors as an atmospheric glow... that worked out nicely.
The work could still take more. Go farther! So I aded the bright yellows to punch up the sky and the glowing, blue counterpoint to further accentuate the water,
With just a few additional moves, it all came to life in a way I never imagined.

Last Colors, pastel, 12 x 18 inches $1350 framed Exhibiting: Dominique Boisjoli Fine Art |
This is all about a singular color and how to keep it interesting. I don't typically work monochromatically but the idea was to catch the greens lit up by a setting sun.
Everything was kept a bit rough at the edges so that the extra detail would add to the complexity. As the pastel progressed, the contrasting colors away from the sun looked best as red-browns and blue-greens. The harmonies were kept tight by using a minimum about of brights and darks.
I'm thinking all the pieces worked together successfully because my eye keeps circling around the pastel, taking it all in.
