About this oil:

Years ago I did a small pastel of a Texas lake, one of those pieces that stays with you. When I came across it again recently, I knew I wanted to revisit it and this time as a much larger oil. The pastel was a really good one and the challenge was to create something even better on a much larger scale.

The layout is similar, but everything else is pushed further. The colors are more intense, more dramatic, and everything in the painting is set up to bring your eye to that bright green area. The rest of the painting has to hold its own too, and a solution presented itself with the three major themes of this piece: sky, trees, and water, each with their own identity and texture.

It reads simply at first, but there's real complexity in every area with color combinations and patterns that reward a closer look. The blue and yellow strips at the top add one more layer of depth, expanding the view.

I was really enjoying the all of the color work here and I didn't want to stop, but the painting didn't need another mark. I'm going to enjoy looking at it for the few days while it's drying. It is one of those paintings that I'll be a little sorry to see go.

After the day's sessions, the group is invited to further discussions and dinner. After the Sunday session, Ken will present Photoshop techniques for taking your works to the next level and creating better pathways for finishing your artworks. You will be given a simplified Photoshop guide and have access to a large, digital photo file of over 2000 inspiring artworks.

Ken will demonstrate painting using oil and pastels, if requested. In addition to making art works, Ken will talk about business and promotion, necessary tools for success in the marketplace.

There will be serious discussions, laughs, and your questions with more continuing after class hours. We will all come away with new tools to take your art to the next level. Ample time will be given to live problem solving, daily critiques and creative options.
