Grateful Notices: February 2014

Last Light
oil on panel 40 x 40

Private collection, Stillwater, MN

This is one of two oils I have done on wood panels. I really like the surface and the boxed- wood panels made by Ampersand are impeccably done. There will be more.

This is a simple subject but it is made more interesting with the glowing water and the red-rose glow in the background. The aqua form in the back was a result of trying everything else first. Only the aqua completed the effect by accenting all the other colors in the oil nicely.

Once it was framed in a pure gold floater, it became a gem.

Thank you Stillwater!

Blue Veils II
oil on canvas 40 x 40
Collection: Shepherd and Kaplan, LLC
San Antonio, TX
Via: Corporate Portfolio, MI

This oil started out much more complex and finally gave way to layers of trees in simplified forms. I just kept subtracting and simplifying the colors until it was done.

Thank you Karen Paul with Corporate Portfolio and Shepherd and Kaplan.

Grateful Notices

Fall with the Evergreens
oil on canvas 48 x 60
Sold to a private collection, Denver, CO

This is one of the more complex paintings I have attempted. Over the year plus that it was in the studio, the oil went through a number of changes. After it was all done, I realized it was really very simple after all. The process was like a few semesters of collage with a great many hours put into this one. It was never frustrating since I really enjoyed making all the changes and learning along the way.

A big thank you to the buyer that liked it right away!

Workshop: St. Simons, Georgia February 2014

Making it Fine Art Workshop

This was fun and wow, the breakthroughs did appear!

Pictured left to right:
Ken  Carol Jo Smidt   Donna Claytor   Carly Hardy  Ella Cart   Lynn Singer

I thoroughly appreciated every moment. It was magical.

Thanks to the Glynn Art Association for their sponsorship and to Carly Hardy for making it all happen. Carly and Ella are locals and they enriched the entire experience with their inside info about everything St. Simons.

Have Ken do a workshop in your area and sign up for those currently scheduled.

I stayed at the Darien Waterfront Inn. It was charming and the owner Jo Ann made it home for me.

Thank you everyone!

Happy New year!
I want to thank everyone for your support, encouragement and to all that have given me the honor of bringing my artworks into your homes and businesses in 2013.

It has been my most successful year as an artist and that encourages me to grow and create more for 2014. I am very grateful for you all.

have a number of exhibits this month.
Mark Lunning of Open Press is one of the premier printmakers in the country. He is celebrating his 25th anniversary and I am honored to have two of my monotypes included in his special exhibit at the McNichols Civic Center, Denver. Displayed will be what Mark considers as some of the best prints made in his studio by 30 artists. Thank you Mark for including me.

In the next few days I'll be finishing up a six-foot commission for a private collection. This painting has gone through a number of changes, all for the better. I thought it was finished numerous times but the next day revealed there was more to do. Sometimes the oils take you for quite a ride before that final mark.

As I look at the calendar, I'm looking forward to my Making it Fine Art workshops lined up. It is great fun to meet other artists, offer your best and watch the changes taking place. A few weeks ago I gave a private lesson to an artist that flew in from Canada. It was a happy weekend and we both extended ourselves in a very productive way.
